CCQs, ICQs and golden rules

Hello, everyone!

Let’s talk about some super easy tools like CCQs, ICQs, and a few golden rules that can help create a positive learning space!

First, let’s use CCQs and ICQs to keep everyone on track.

CCQs (Concept Checking Questions) and ICQs (Instruction Checking Questions) are simple ways to make sure students understand and follow instructions. For CCQs, you can ask something like, “Is this something we do every day or just once a week?” to check students’ understanding. For ICQs, you might ask, “Are we working alone or in pairs?” to confirm they’re clear on instructions. These quick questions keep things organized and focused.

Creating a few simple, clear rules with the class helps a lot, too. As EducationWorld (2011) says, “Keep the rules few and simple.” Involve students by asking what rules they think would help everyone work together. A short class discussion or survey can go a long way! When students help decide the rules, they’re more likely to respect them.

To make the rules fun, create a classroom poster together. Bring out markers, glue, and maybe even have students sign it. This makes the rules feel personal and special to the class. Choose short, positive statements like “Be respectful” or “Come ready to learn.” Simple language keeps expectations clear, and a quick point to the poster can be a friendly reminder if anyone forgets!

Sometimes, rules may need tweaking. Feel free to adjust them based on your students’ needs, and use familiar language, like Spanish, to make everyone feel welcome.

By using CCQs, ICQs, and setting a few clear rules, you’re setting up a classroom that’s friendly, positive, and ready to learn. Here’s to an amazing school year!
