The silent way

Hello! Today, we have another English language class with a new teaching method - The Silent Way.

The Silent Way is a teaching method that was established in the early 1970s by Caleb Gattegno, a mathematician and educator. This method is based on the idea that learners should construct and discover the language independently, rather than having it explicitly taught by the teacher. The Silent Way encourages students to be independent and actively engage in the learning process.

Some of the key features of this cutting-edge method include:

  • Teacher Silence: In this method, the teacher remains silent during the lesson, allowing students to take the lead in their learning process. This silence fosters independent learning and problem-solving skills, empowering students to take ownership of their learning.
  • Use of Cuisenaire Rods: Cuisenaire rods, which are colorful rods of different lengths, are used to represent various language elements, such as sounds, words, and grammatical structures. These rods serve as visual aids to help learners understand and manipulate the language tangibly, making learning more engaging and interactive.

  • Color-coded Pronunciation Charts: Pronunciation charts are color-coded to help students visualize and understand the sounds of the target language. By associating each sound with a specific color, students can better grasp the pronunciation patterns of the language, leading to a more confident and accurate speaking ability

  • Focus on Self-Correction: The Silent Way encourages self-correction among learners. Students are expected to monitor their progress and correct their mistakes, fostering responsibility for their learning. This approach leads to better retention and a more profound understanding of the language.
  • Inductive Learning: The Silent Way emphasizes inductive learning, where students learn by discovering the rules and patterns of the language through hands-on experience, rather than having them explicitly taught by the teacher.
This is part of an activity, we created this sentence: My friend and I played secret friend for Valentine´s Day, so we decided to buy flowers.

See ya next week!
